Press Release Dec 2004 - "We three kings of recycling are" An ancient tradition got a modern treatment when pupils from a Cherry Hinton school made their nativity out of recycled materials.
Year six pupils at Colville County Primary School got into the spirit of Christmas by reusing figures from a recent recycling promotion and transforming them into Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus. Pupils and teachers also collected recycled materials to make the Three Wise Men and sheep. The idea came from the Cambridgeshire Community Reuse and Recycle Network (CCORRN) who offered schools the chance to recycle some figures they had used for the Choose2Reuse recycling roadshow in September. The idea proved popular with lots of schools expressing an interest and Colville Primary was chosen as being the first to reply to the project. School secretary Maggie Street said: "This is the first time we've done something like this and the children found it a lot of fun while learning an important lesson about how rubbish can be transformed into something very different and useful." Victor Perez, Waste Campaigns Officer for Cambridgeshire County Council which is a member of CCORRN, said: "The children have done a beautiful job and helped us to spread the message that even though the amount of waste we produce goes up at Christmas, we can recycle and re-use lots of it - it just takes a bit of creativity."

CCORRN is a partnership between the community, public and private sector that started in early 2003 with financial support obtained by Cambridgeshire County Council from the DEFRA Recycling Challenge Fund and from Enventure, an environmental body that administers Landfill Tax Credits for the waste operator - Donarbon Ltd of Waterbeach. The project was initially co-ordinated by Anglia Polytechnic University's WasteWISE Champion.
